Third Day of School - August 16, 2012 We are on our way. We are starting to get into a routine and figure out how everything is done. It is a big change for the 5th graders but they are doing a great job. They are learning how to use their planners and their expandable files. We are all patient with each other as we are adapting to the new school year. Today in social studies we learned the location of the UK, Malta, Vatican City, and many other places in Europe. We are going to start learning more about the countries and capitals next week.
In Science today, we learned more about the five different steps scientists use when they are studying the world around us. We use notes from our book that the students are filling in. This helps them to pay attention to what is important in our textbook.
In reading, the 5th and 6th graders learned about Noah Webster and what life was like before we had a dictionary. I also discussed with them how new words are added to the dictionary each year and gave them some examples.
At the end of the day, we had English where we started to classify sentences with pattern 1. Pattern one is subject noun verb. They took a while before they rememebered this from last year, but then they told me their brains remembered it all!
First Day of School!
Today was the first day! We started the day with chapel led by both pastors. Mrs. Willenbrock was installed as our 5-8th grade teacher. We spent a lot of time this morning organizing and labeling different notebooks. Tomorrow we will start using our organization system once the students get homework.
The 5th graders are reading the book Bunnicula. The 6th-8th graders are reading The Giver. If you haven't ever read those books, I would suggest you do. I think the students will enjoy these two books.
I hope everyone checks this website daily to see any updates.
Planners are 5 dollars. Please buy one for your student if you haven't done that yet.
I am excited for our school year to start! It will be a great year! Our major
field trip of the year is a trip to Camp Lutherhaven this spring.
Daily Schedule: Our schedule stays the same for most of the time. There will always be times that our schedule changes because of field trips or other special events that are going on. I try to be consistent so the students know what to expect daily. Try to schedule doctor appointments at the end of the day so your child won't miss any core subjects.

One important aspect this year that we will be focused on is organization.
Organization will help the students find their homework and have it done on
time. We will be using our expandable folders and assignment books to help us do this! Every night the students will bring home their planners and the planners will be signed daily by parents.
