Getting to Know our Teachers
Welcome to 5th and 6th grade!
5th and 6th grade is a combined classroom. In our classroom, most subjects are taught together. Math and spelling are taught according to their specific grade level.
This is the year also where students start their confirmation classes. One of the two pastors teaches religion 4 times a week to the students. On Wednesday, the entire school has chapel together.
Life science is the curriculum we use at these grade levels. Students learn about plant life and cells. They also learn about different diseases, the human body and animal science.
We follow the state guidelines of having reading for 90 minutes a day. We do this by having a reading class and a literature class. In our reading class, students use a large book with short stories in it which are both fiction and nonfiction. Different literature elements are discussed during this class including but not limited to: plot, conflict, resolution, setting, and character development.
Literature is spent reading a variety of age appropriate books. A few of the books that have been read are: Little House on the Prairie, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, My Side of the Mountain, and many others.
Social studies is a study of the world. Students learn both physical, political geography, and cultural geography. Students use a variety of maps to explore the world around them.
English is spent learning the rules of grammar and also writing with the rules they have used. Shurley English is the name of the curriculum that we use. Students practice writing a variety of type of pieces from fiction to nonfiction.
Spelling is taught according to grade level. Students have daily spelling assignments and tests on Fridays.
Math is taught separately by grade level. Students spend time doing math facts and daily homework.
We also have special subjects for the students daily. Our specials include art, music, PE, and technology. Students also have a chance to be in student council. Student council helps to plan events for the student body. They also have had dances to help raise money. Last year the students sang at the nursing home to be involved in the community.
Students starting in 4th grade also have a chance to be in band. Band is during the day where an instructor from Concordia High School comes to our school. This is a great opportunity for the students.
Students also have time during the day to read their accelerated reading book that they get from our library.
